HAYES VALLEY PLAYGROUND

This project was a partnership between SF Park and Recreation and the City of San Francisco, with support from 35 Ventures. It was Kevin Durant's parting gift to San Francisco when he moved from the Warriors to Brooklyn, in collaboration with Joe Gibbia of Airbnb.

The entire playground was resurfaced, and I was brought in to design a mural for the basketball court. I used my signature style but incorporated elements that suggest potential driving lanes for basketball players—from the top of the key, corner threes, or cross-court passes. The primary colors were chosen partly because we used asphalt paint, which was a learning curve for me. Unlike traditional artist paints, asphalt paint requires an oversized squeegee or trowel to scrape it into the surface.

Despite the challenges, the paint is incredibly durable, and learning a new medium was exciting. I'm grateful to have contributed to this gift for my hometown of San Francisco.
